The Kama Sutra – erotic art and texts.

This is an ancient Hindu text, which is widely believed to be the work of Vãtsyãyana in Sanskrit literature. Not necessarily written to be erotic, it has however, held onto its obvious links with the genre of erotic art and texts.

It is largely written in prose with poetry verse inserted into this and it details human sexual behavior. Kama, in this sense, means sensual or sexual pleasure, sutra meaning the line that holds this together.   Contrary to the perception in the West, this book is not just a sex manual but is intended as a guide to gracious living and encourages love, family life and other aspects of pleasure that we are able to encounter.   The Kama Sutra is the oldest and not noteworthy of a group of texts, which are generically called the Kama Sutra. The first, Kama Shastra, is attributed to Nandi, the sacred bull and Shiva’s doorkeeper. It is believed that he was moved to utterances by the beauty of the lovemaking of the God and his wife Parvati.   Historians estimate that the book was composed between 400 BCE and 200 CE. It was collected into its present form in the 2ndCentury.   Sir Richard Francis Burton translated the book into English for the first time around 1883 – the work is attributed to him but was mostly composed by an Indian Archeologist named Bhagwanlal Indraji.  Burton acted as publisher and added the many footnotes to the translation   The world remains fascinated with this work and long may it remain so. This is the very briefest of overview…. it is worth finding out more.

A little about our artist AnnaMaria Pinaka and what her photography is about.. its purpose. My photographic practice is informed by my desire to record my self, friends and lovers and also my desire to ‘see’. I create images out of ‘real’ life situations; I take pictures when it happens that people around me are naked or involved in sensual and sexual moments. This photographing process draws from my video practice and my academic work on the relationship of porn and sex with notions of the ‘real’ and ‘truth’. Broadly my practice is based on throw-way snap-shot or ‘low/tech’ aesthetics, informed by the idea of diarism and my interest in creating memories and reports.

I work by responding to stereotypes, archetypes of images, symbols and emblems and the meaning they supposedly carry. My choices are invested in processes of emptying and filling the ‘meaning’ of the images I create.

These ideas correspond to my interest in appearing and hiding and the oscillation between the private and the public, in the construction of the ‘portrait’ and the ‘self-portrait’.

Welcome to the photography of AnnaMaria Pinaka. Her profile can be found by clicking the artists link above.
